Leipzig

In 1497, Leipzig received the imperial trade fair privilege, on which the city’s long trade fair tradition is based to this day, as evidenced by its new and modern exhibition centerand its international reputation.

Hardly any other city has such a richmusicalheritageas Leipzig. Names like Johann Sebastian Bach and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy are inseparable linked to Leipzig. Today, cultural enjoyment is still provided by the Gewandhaus, the Leipzig Opera or the world-famous St. Thomas Boys Choir. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe also studied in Leipzig and perpetuated the Auerbachs Keller restaurant in his play “Faust”.

The historic city center has an unmistakable flair due to its unique small and branched streets. Boutiques and department stores invite visitors to shop and stroll. Most of the city’s sights are within walking distance, such as the Old Town Hall, St. Thomas Church or the Nikolaikirche, which is considered the starting point for the Monday demonstrations that led to the peaceful opening of the inner-German border in 1989.
