Looking at architecture in Germany and Austria, one can find many building projects standing for innovative concepts, sustainable construction and ecological responsibility. Interesting projects can visited with experienced architectural guides anywhere in Germany and Austria and the programs can adapt to individual requirements and any specific demand.
Besides buildings and their construction, another focus can be set on city development, infrastructure and modern city planning, realizing new and innovative concepts of urban life. The aspect of green living in the city and restructuring from former industrial zones to parks and event places can be shown on many examples.
Berlin – surely the liveliest and fastest developing city in Germany after the fall of the Wall with many examples of contemporary architecture and hybrid buildings. Private and public projects are open for architectural visits and there are numerous ways to experience different concepts and sights – wether it is the parliamentary district, Potsdamer Platz, the new museum island or art spaces in Berlin.
Hamburg – HafenCity, Elbphilharmonie and the IBA, Hamburg has plenty of new buildings arising and the city’s development in the former harbour area is one of the most exiting large area projects within Germany. The concert hall Elbphilharmonie in the harbour and the connecting HafenCity, an area of 155 hectar in the city on the former harbour docks are nowadays the newest and most rapidly developing construction sites. The former area of the IBA (International Building Exhibition) from 2014 still shows plenty of interesting projects.
Düsseldorf/Ruhr area – The former industrial area of Rhine and Ruhr have transformed with in the latest years to a center of urban development and restructuring of industrial complexes and areas to cultural and green living space for its inhabitants. Cities have changed towards service industry and so did their picture. The perfect coexistence of old industrial architecture being used today as theaters or office buildings and green and restructured parks are standing for the new and trendy Ruhr area.
Frankfurt – the city is the home of the new EZB tower and called ‘Mainhattan’ because of the many high-rise buildings from international banks and corporations. The Westhafen area, a former commercial harbour along the river Main, has been transferred into a modern living and working quarter with new offices and luxury apartments.
Munich – BMW and the Olympic Games from 1974, the Oktoberfest and typical Bavarian tradition. The capital of Bavaria is diverse and complex and so is its architecture. Representative buildings of the former kings of Bavaria still dominate the cities picture, but as well do the BMW tower or the impressive architecture of the Olympic arena. The Allianz arena, home of the football club Bayern München, is a landmark of its own. Modern museums became a center within the city and collect finest pieces of art in extraordinary buildings.
Vienna – where new meets old, tradition inspires contemporary architecture. The imperial architecture is of course dominating the city center and it is listed as UNESCO world cultural heritage. Modern architecture finds its way within this surrounding and fits perfectly into the traditional landmarks, building a bridge from the imperial time to the modern and trendy capital of Austria from today.
